Each SEC football team has eight conference games this year on the docket. There is also a required opponent from either the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac 12, or major independent for each school. The two remaining games are up to each school to finish out the schedule. There are discussions within the conference to expand the number of conference games to nine for the 2026 SEC football schedule, but the agreement has not been finalized yet.

The SEC purposely approached the 2024 season schedule as its own animal while formulating the long-term scheduling strategy. The 2024 SEC football schedule is the first time we’ve had 16 teams in the conference. The league required eight conference games while keeping one significant opponent from a major conference or independent team. By eliminating divisions, it allows each school to play all of the other member schools at least two times in a four year period.
Teams will play each other twice within four years regardless of an eight or nine game conference game requirement. The single year strategy also affords more time to look at the expanded College Football Playoff impacts on traditional rivalries and new matchups within the conference. Additional business rules the conference used were incorporating historic team records, and ensuring no team travels to the same place they went to in the 2023 regular season.

2024 SEC Football Championship
The 2024 SEC football championship game takes place on December 7th, 2024. The game has been played since 1992 and since 2007 on the first Saturday in December. Mercedes-Benz Stadium is the host for the 2024 SEC championship game. The stadium has been the host since 2017. 2024 will be the first year that the top two seeded teams from regular season play earn a spot in the championship game. This will also be the first year of the expanded College Football Playoff, so we could very likely see both teams earn a spot in the expanded postseason of play.
