How Football Squares Work
Football squares is a simple game played on a 10 by 10 grid, which makes 100 squares. The two teams are placed on the two axes, one across the top and one down the side. Players buy squares by writing their name or initials in the boxes until the grid is full.
Once every square is taken, you randomly draw the digits 0 through 9 and write one in front of each row and each column. Each square now matches a pair of digits, one for each team. This random draw is what makes the game fair, since nobody knows which numbers they will get until every square is sold.
Winners are decided by the score at the end of each quarter. You take the last digit of each team’s score and find the square where those two digits meet. For example, if the score is 17 to 10 at halftime, the winning square is the one at the 7 row or column for the first team and the 0 for the second.
Common Payout Splits
Most pools pay a winner at the end of each quarter. A common split is 20 percent of the pot for the first quarter, 20 percent at halftime, 20 percent after the third quarter, and 40 percent for the final score, since the last digits have had the most chances to change by then.
