NHL teams are ranked within their division by total points. A regulation or overtime win is worth 2 points; an overtime or shootout loss earns 1 point; a regulation loss earns 0. The top three teams in each of the four divisions qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and the next two best teams in each conference claim the wild-card spots, for 16 total playoff teams. Ties in points are broken first by regulation wins, then by regulation-plus-overtime wins.
