Draft Strategy in 60 Seconds

Most fantasy leagues are nine-category (points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, three-pointers, field-goal percentage, free-throw percentage, and turnovers). You do not need to win every category, you need to win more matchups than you lose. The sharpest way to do that is to punt: intentionally give up one or two categories so your remaining picks dominate the rest. A common build is punting free-throw percentage to load up on bigs who block shots and grab boards, or punting assists to stack scoring wings. Decide your punt by the second or third round based on who falls to you, then draft every pick to reinforce it.

In snake drafts, prioritize players who help in multiple categories early, then target specialists to shore up your build. In auction drafts, spend most of your budget on three or four stars and fill the back half of your roster with value and upside.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is the No. 1 pick in 2026-27 fantasy basketball?

Nikola Jokic is the consensus No. 1 overall pick for standard category leagues, with Victor Wembanyama and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander rounding out the top three.

When should I draft my fantasy basketball team?

Draft in the week or two before the regular season opens on October 20, 2026, after preseason has clarified rotations and roles.

What is punting in fantasy basketball?

Punting means intentionally giving up one or two categories so you can dominate the others. For example, punting free-throw percentage lets you draft elite shot-blocking bigs who would otherwise drag that category down.

Are these rankings for category or points leagues?

The draft board above reflects standard nine-category league value. Points-league value shifts slightly toward high-usage scorers, so bump pure scorers up a few spots if your league uses points scoring.
