2026 World Cup Standings FAQ

How do the 2026 World Cup standings work with 48 teams?
The 48 teams are split into 12 four-team groups (A through L). Each team plays the other three in its group once. Teams earn 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, and 0 for a loss. The top two finishers in each group plus the eight best third-place finishers (32 teams total) advance to the Round of 32 knockout stage.

What tiebreakers decide group order if teams are level on points?
FIFA applies these tiebreakers in order: (1) goal differential across all group matches, (2) goals scored, (3) head-to-head points between the tied teams, (4) head-to-head goal differential, (5) head-to-head goals scored, (6) Fair Play points, (7) FIFA ranking, and finally a drawing of lots.

When do these standings update?
The live tables refresh nightly during the group stage (June 11 – June 27, 2026), so you’ll see the previous day’s results, current points totals, and goal differentials when you check in each morning. Friday Game 1/Game 2 results post the same evening as matches finish.

Where is the 2026 World Cup Final being played?
The Final is on Sunday, July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, just outside New York City.
