So, it’s time to see how the 2024 MLB payrolls are paying off for teams. We’re about a quarter of the way through the season, and the Dodgers and Yankees are killing it. They are #2 and #3 in the overall payroll expenditures for the season. The Phillies at #4 are doing well as well. The Mets who are projected to spend the most this season at $323 Million are seeing a slow start to the season. We have the full list of payrolls and what each team has committed for their 2025 MLB payroll for you too.
How has the Dodgers Big Spending Paid Off so Far?
So far, the Dodgers’ big spending has been paying off. They spent over $1.3 billion on Shohei Ohtani ($700 million), Yoshinobu Yamamoto ($325 million), Tyler Glasnow ($136.6 million) and Will Smith ($140 million) in the offseason. Now, a lot of that money you won’t see reflected in the 2024 MLB payrolls listing. That is because the Dodgers deferred a lot of the money. They are 32-17 at the time of this writing in first place in the Division. Ohtani has just been killing it. Another MVP-type of year for him.
What about the Yankees and Phillies?
The Yankees ($302 million) and Phillies ($246 million) have been delivering on their payroll. The Yankees are 33-15 in first place in the AL East. The Phillies are 34-14 in first place in the NL East over the Braves by five game so far. If everyone stays healthy, we’ll likely see them join the Dodgers in the MLB postseason this year.
Which Teams have not Performed to their Payroll so Far?
Well, the Mets and Astros have not been doing as well as expected this season. The Mets are #1 in the 2024 MLB payrolls list at $323 million, and the Astros are #5 at $241 million. The Mets are 21-25 on the season so far in third place in the division. The Astros are 21-26 in third place. There’s still time for both teams to get hot, but time is ticking.
