As we start the 2024 MLB regular season, the Texas Rangers are the defending World Series Champions. The first game of the regular season will be played on March 20th, 2024, in Seoul, South Korea. The two-game series will feature the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres. The teams will play the second of a two-game series on March 21st. The 2024 MLB Postseason will kick-off on October 1st, 2024.
2024 MLB Regular Season Schedule
After the Dodgers-Padres series, MLB opening day will be March 28th, 2024. Similar to the 2023 MLB regular season, each team will play 52 of their 162 game total against their division rivals. This will be 13 games against each of those opponents. MLB has each team playing 46 total interleague games. These include a four-game home-home series against their designated interleague rival team. The remaining games will be six against six opponents in the same league and seven against the four remaining for 64 total games in the schedule.
2024 MLB World Tour Plans
The 2024 MLB season has a treat for international fans. The MLB World Tour has teams playing in three countries. Teams will find themselves in South Korea, Mexico, and the United Kingdom. The Dodgers and Padres series will be the first ever MLB regular season games in South Korea. Following this trip, the Houston Astros and Colorado Rockies will play at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú in Mexico City on April 27–28, 2024. The final international road-trip for MLB teams will be the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies playing at London Stadium in London, England on June 8-9, 2024.
MLB Rule Changes for the 2024 Season
Similar to the 2023 MLB season, we have a series of rule changes in store for 2024 before we get into the playoff schedule. These are more of improvements to past rules than the big ones we saw go into effect last season. First, a refinement to the pitch clock. Now, following a dead ball, the pitch clark restarts as soon as the ball is received by the pitcher from the umpire. Before, it would not start until the pitcher entered the circle around the mound. Also, when there are runners on, the clock’s starting time decreases from 20 to 18 seconds.
Other rule changes of note include a reduction of mound visits from five to four. One caveat is that if a team has used all four visits by the ninth inning, they will get a 5th visit if required. For pitchers, once they warm up at the start of an inning, they have to face a minimum of one batter. This starts from the first warmup pitch.
Finally, the runner’s lane has been clarified. It is now widened to the cut of the infield grass in fair territory. MLB also requires the distance between the foul line and infield grass to be between 18-24 inches. Not all ballparks meet this requirement, so a grace period has been granted by the league.

The World Series is a best of seven game matchup and is the last step in the 2024 MLB playoff bracket. The team with the higher regular season winning percentage will have home field advantage. It doesn’t matter if they won their division title or were a Wild Card team. If both teams have the same winning percentage, then their head-to-head record during the regular season determines home field.
2024 MLB Playoff Picture
So, we’re getting into the second month of the MLB regular season now. We have some surprises already. First, is what the heck happened to the Houston Astros? They will need to wake up soon to remain relevant in the postseason conversation. Now, no surprises out of the Yankees. The Dodgers are in first, but definitely not blowing everyone out as fans thought before the season. There’s still a lot of baseball.
The Padres are a lot better than predicted. Heck, so are the Angels with Mike Trout just killing it so far this season. The Cleveland Guardians being in 1st place is probably the biggest surprise to me so far. We still have a lot of baseball left to play. We’ll keep you updated on what the prospects for the Wildcard spots look like as we get deeper into the MLB regular season.
