How the All-Star rosters are chosen
The starting position players are decided by fan voting in two phases. In Phase 1, fans narrow the field and the top overall vote-getter in each league automatically locks up a starting spot: this year that is Shohei Ohtani (American League, designated hitter) and Ernie Clement (National League, second base). Phase 2 voting ran June 29 to July 2 and set the head-to-head finalists at every other position. The winners, plus the reserves and pitchers selected by player ballot and the league office, are all announced on the July 4 Selection Show.
- Starters: chosen by fan vote, revealed on the July 4 Selection Show.
- Reserves and pitchers: chosen by player ballot and the Commissioner’s Office, announced on the same show.
- Designated hitter: used by both leagues.
- Tie game: if the score is level after nine innings, the game is decided by a Home Run Derby-style swing-off, as introduced in 2025.
