How the All-Star starting lineups are set

Fans elect the starters at each position, but the batting order is the manager’s call. Each league’s manager arranges the elected starters into a 1 through 9 lineup, and both leagues use the designated hitter, so a pitcher does not bat. The orders are typically released the afternoon before the game. Last year, for example, the National League opened with Shohei Ohtani batting leadoff as the DH – the kind of decision the managers reveal at this stage.
