2024 Belmont Stakes Schedule

The 2024 Belmont Stakes schedule takes place on Saturday, June 8th, 2024. This is the final leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown and will be the 156th running of the race. Due to renovations ongoing with Belmont Park, the race takes place at the Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York. While the Belmont is traditionally the longest of the three races, the length of the race is shorter this year at 10 furlongs (1 1 /4 miles).

This is due to the shorter main track at Saratoga. The post time for the race is approximately 6:50 PM ET (5:50 PM CT, 4:50 PM MT, and 3:50PM PT). We have the schedule, TV broadcast information, and more for you below.

How Do Horses Qualify for the Belmont Stakes?

So, a common question that comes up is how do horses qualify for the Belmont Stakes? First, the Belmont is limited to three-year-old thoroughbreds only. Then, the top three finishing horses from both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes get an automatic entry to the field (if they choose to take it). From there, the other requirements for hoses who don’t race well at the KY Derby or Preakness include making weight (126 pounds for colts and 121 pounds for fillies).

The horse owners have to pay a series of entry fees, and their horse has to be nominated to be in the field. Typically this means the horse has done at least OK in past races. The maximum number of horses that can race is normally capped at 14 horses (we don’t normally have this problem in recent years).

When was the Last Time the Belmont Stakes was not Held at Belmont Park?

The last time the Belmont Stakes was held at a different location was from 1963-1967. This was the last time the track was under construction. Aqueduct Race Track located in Ozone Park, Queens hosted the race these years.
