Play-In and Playoff Picture

The NBA seeds its playoff field by overall conference record, not by division, so the division tables above feed one combined seed list in each conference. The top six teams in each conference clinch a playoff berth outright. Seeds seven through ten play in the Play-In Tournament: the 7-seed hosts the 8-seed with the winner taking the 7-spot, the 9-seed hosts the 10-seed in an elimination game, and the loser of the 7-vs-8 game then hosts the winner of the 9-vs-10 game for the final 8-seed. The four first-round series in each conference are then set as 1-vs-8, 2-vs-7, 3-vs-6, and 4-vs-5.

Once the season is underway, this section will track the live seed order in both conferences, the play-in cut line, and the tiebreaker notes that decide close races.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the 2026-27 NBA regular season start?

Opening night is Tuesday, October 20, 2026, with a three-game slate on NBC: the Celtics at the Pistons, the 76ers at the Knicks, and the Thunder at the Spurs.

How many teams make the NBA playoffs?

Sixteen teams reach the playoffs, eight from each conference. The top six seeds in each conference qualify directly, and the final two spots per conference are decided by the Play-In Tournament among the 7 through 10 seeds.

How does the NBA Play-In Tournament work?

The 7-seed hosts the 8-seed, and the winner becomes the 7-seed. The 9-seed hosts the 10-seed in a win-or-go-home game. The loser of the 7-vs-8 game then hosts the winner of the 9-vs-10 game, and that winner takes the 8-seed.

Are NBA playoff seeds based on division or conference?

Seeds are based on overall conference record. Winning a division does not guarantee a top seed, so a team can win its division and still be seeded below a non-division-winner with a better record.

How often is this page updated?

Daily through the regular season. Win-loss records, win percentage, games back, and streaks refresh each morning so the conference and division tables stay current.
