Expected Value in Betting Explained: Formula & Examples

Expected value is the single most important idea in profitable sports betting. It measures whether a bet makes money on average, regardless of whether any one wager wins or loses. Master it and you stop grading yourself by last night’s results and start grading yourself by the quality of your decisions. This guide explains expected value in plain English, works a real example, and links you to a free calculator and printable worksheet.

Expected value betting guide: is a bet plus-EV

What Expected Value Means

Expected value, or EV, is the average result of a bet if you could place it thousands of times. A positive expected value bet, often called plus-EV, earns money over the long run. A negative EV bet bleeds it. The number itself tells you how much you expect to win or lose per dollar staked, which is exactly the information you need to decide whether a price is worth taking.

The Expected Value Formula

Convert the odds to decimal, multiply by your estimated win probability, and subtract 1. The result is the expected value per dollar. Multiply that by your stake to get the dollar figure. A closely related number is the break-even probability, which is simply 1 divided by the decimal odds. Whenever your true win probability beats the break-even probability, the bet is plus-EV.

A Worked Example

Suppose a bet is priced at +120, decimal 2.20, and you honestly think it wins half the time. Break-even probability is 1 divided by 2.20, or 45.45 percent, so your 50 percent estimate gives you an edge of about 4.55 percent. Expected value per dollar is 0.50 times 2.20 minus 1, which equals 0.10. On a $100 stake that is a plus-EV of $10, a 10 percent expected ROI. Fair odds for a coin flip would be even money, +100, so +120 is a genuine overlay.

You do not have to run this by hand every time. Our free expected value calculator takes the odds, your win probability, and your stake and instantly returns the dollar EV, your ROI, the break-even probability, and your edge over the book. Enter American or decimal odds and watch the numbers update as the line moves.

Where Your Win Probability Comes From

Expected value is only as good as the probability you feed it, so the real skill is estimating that number well. Sharp bettors build it from models, from de-vigged market prices at sharp books, or from injury and matchup information the market has not fully priced. Whatever your method, be honest and conservative. Inflating your win probability makes every bet look plus-EV when it is not.

Why Plus-EV Beats Chasing Wins

A plus-EV bet can lose and a negative EV bet can win on any given day, which is why judging your betting by recent results is a trap. Over a large sample, your bankroll follows the expected value of your decisions, not your short-term luck. Grade every bet by its EV, keep taking the plus-EV ones, and the math works in your favor over time.

The Bottom Line

Expected value turns betting from guesswork into a numbers game you can actually win. Estimate your win probability honestly, run it through the calculator, and take the bets that come back positive. Any single result is noise; the expected value is the signal. As always, bet responsibly and within your means.
