What’s so Cool about the Coca Cola 600?

Besides being the longest race on the NASCAR Cup Series Circuit, the Coca-Cola 600 is one of the few night races on the schedule. The race first took place in 1960 and caps a full weekend of racing for fans. Kyle Larson will be attempting to race in both the Indy 500 and the Coca Cola 600 this year with McLaren Racing. He will be the fifth driver to attempt “The Double.” Other drivers who have accomplished this are Kurt Busch, Tony Stewart, John Andretti, and Robby Gordon. The race purse for 2024 is just a tad over $9.4 million this year.

The Coca Cola 600 is the only NASCAR race to be divided into four uniform stages. Each state consists of 100 laps. All of the other major races are divided into three stages. In the event weather impacts the race, it becomes official once the second stage is complete (just like the other races). This also makes the race the highest potential scoring one a driver can win. If a driver wins each stage and the race, they earn 70 points (40 for winning and 10 for the first three stages).
