How Does the NFL Playoff Bracket Work?

First, there are a total of 14 teams who earn a spot in the NFL playoffs. There are seven from the AFC (American Football Conference) and seven from the National Football Conference (NFC).

Out of these seven teams, there are four division winners and three wild card teams. For each division, the winner is the team with the best regular season record in the division. The wild card teams are the next there teams in the conference with the best record. When it comes to seeding, divisional winners are seeded first based on record. During the NFL Wild Card Round of play, the lowest seeded team plays against the highest seeded divisional winner. The overall #1 seed gets a bye for each conference. The winners of these games move on the Divisional round. The NFL will then have the highest seed play the lowest (ie reseeds the field) for each matchup. These winners move on to play in the conference championships who determine the two teams that will play in the Super Bowl.
