Vertical Jump Calculator

This free vertical jump calculator measures your vertical two ways. Use the reach method if you know your standing reach and how high you touch at the top of a jump, or use the hang-time method if you have a slow-motion video and can read your air time. Switch between the two below and enter your numbers in inches or centimeters.

How to Measure Your Vertical Jump

The simplest way is the reach method. Stand flat-footed next to a wall, reach up with one hand, and mark the highest point you can touch. That is your standing reach. Then jump and touch as high as you can, and mark that spot. Your vertical jump is the distance between the two marks. If you would rather use video, film yourself jumping in slow motion, measure how long both feet are off the ground, and enter that hang time above. The calculator converts it to jump height using basic physics.

Frequently Asked Questions: Vertical Jump

What is a good vertical jump?

For most adults, a vertical of 16 to 20 inches is above average, and 24 inches or more is excellent. Trained basketball and volleyball players often clear 28 inches, and elite dunkers can top 40.

How do I calculate vertical jump from hang time?

Jump height in centimeters equals about 122.6 times your hang time in seconds squared. For example, 0.6 seconds of air time works out to roughly 44 cm, or about 17 inches. The calculator above does this for you.

How can I increase my vertical jump?

Strength work like squats, explosive moves like box jumps and depth jumps, and improving your jump technique all help. Consistency and adequate recovery matter more than any single drill.
