What Is Hedging a Bet?

Hedge betting calculator: lock in profit on a live bet

Hedging a bet means placing a second wager on the opposite outcome of a bet you already have, so you come out ahead no matter what happens. It is most useful when a bet has gained value, such as a futures ticket or the last leg of a parlay, and you want to guarantee a profit instead of risking it all on one result. The hedge betting calculator above tells you exactly how much to bet on the other side.

How to Use the Hedge Calculator

Enter the odds and stake of your original bet, then enter the current odds on the opposing outcome. The calculator returns the hedge stake that equalizes both results, your total amount staked, the return you lock in either way, and your guaranteed profit and ROI. It also shows what you would win or lose if you chose not to hedge at all.

Worked Example

Say you bet $100 on a team at +250 (decimal 3.50), so the ticket returns $350 if it wins. The other outcome is now available at +140 (decimal 2.40). To equalize, you hedge $350 divided by 2.40, which is about $145.83. Your total staked becomes $245.83, both outcomes return $350, and you lock in a guaranteed profit of about $104.17, roughly a 42 percent return. Without hedging you would win $250 or lose your $100.

Hedging vs a Cash-Out Offer

A sportsbook cash-out is really just the book hedging for you and keeping a margin. Use this calculator to work out the guaranteed profit you could lock in yourself, then compare it to the cash-out figure the book is offering. If your manual hedge pays more, place it yourself. If the cash-out offer is higher, take the offer. Either way you are making the decision with real numbers instead of a gut feeling.

Hedge Calculator FAQ

What is a hedge betting calculator? A hedge betting calculator works out how much to bet on the opposite outcome of a bet you already have so you lock in a profit or minimize a loss no matter which side wins.

How do you calculate a hedge bet? Find your original bet’s potential return (stake times decimal odds), then divide it by the decimal odds on the other side. That is your hedge stake, which makes both outcomes pay the same amount.

Is hedging the same as cashing out? They achieve the same goal, but a cash-out is the sportsbook hedging on your behalf and keeping a margin. Hedging yourself often locks in more profit, which is why comparing the two is worth it.

When should you hedge a bet? Hedging makes the most sense when a bet has gained value and a guaranteed profit is attractive, such as a futures ticket or the final leg of a parlay, or when you want to protect your stake against a loss.

Does hedging guarantee a profit? Only if the other side’s odds are high enough. If they have moved too far, hedging locks in a smaller loss instead. The calculator tells you which situation you are in before you bet.
