How the Barbell Load Calculator Works

The calculator subtracts the bar weight from your target, splits the remainder in half (one side of the bar), and then works down from the biggest plates to the smallest to find the fewest plates that reach the number. If standard plates cannot hit the exact weight, it shows the closest match and how far short it is.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a standard barbell weigh?

A standard Olympic barbell weighs 45 pounds, or about 20 kg. Women’s Olympic bars are 15 kg, and many training bars are lighter, so set the bar weight to match yours.

What plates does the calculator use?

In pounds it uses 45, 35, 25, 10, 5, and 2.5 lb plates. In kilograms it uses 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5, and 1.25 kg plates, the standard gym sizes.

Why does it load the same weight on both sides?

A barbell must be balanced, so plates are always added in matching pairs. The calculator shows the load for one side, and you mirror it on the other.
