Upset Watch

Indianapolis Colts over Dallas Cowboys (Colts +1.5). A one-and-a-half-point line is the book telling you this is a coin flip, and we will take the home team getting points. Indianapolis has been tougher to beat at home than its record suggests, and a Dallas team traveling on a short week into a loud dome is the kind of spot where favorites slip. We have the Colts winning outright, 30-27.

Houston Texans over Los Angeles Chargers (Texans +2.5). Houston’s defense is the reason to look here. The Texans travel well, and getting a field goal plus the hook with a defense that can disrupt a timing passing game is good value. We like Houston to win the game, 23-20, in one that could come down to the final possession.

Honorable mention: Green Bay at New England. The Patriots are only 1.5-point home favorites, and we lean Green Bay to win straight up, 24-20 – close enough that we kept it out of the headline upset slots but worth a long look.

Best Bets and Leans

These are opinions, not locks. Think of them as the plays we feel best about after reading the full board.

  • Best bet – Detroit -6.5 at Miami. The gap in trench play and explosive offense is wide enough that we are comfortable laying the touchdown minus a hook. Lions 31-20.
  • Lean – Denver -3.5 at Carolina. Denver’s defense travels, and a field goal plus the hook against a rebuilding offense is a number we like.
  • Lean – Under 41.5 in Browns-Saints. Two offenses that stall in the red zone and a total this low still feels like the right side to us.
  • Lean – Arizona +13.5 at Seattle. Thirteen and a half is a lot of points for a division game. We will take the Cardinals and the number even while picking Seattle to win.

Storylines to Watch

Thursday night in Baltimore. The Ravens open Week 9 at home against Jacksonville with the AFC North and a playoff seed on the line. A healthier Baltimore roster laying 4.5 is the market betting on the home side pulling away late.

The NFC East crossroads. Philadelphia hosts the Giants as a 5.5-point favorite while Dallas heads to Indianapolis as the rare road favorite we are fading. How those two games break could reshape the division race.

Kansas City and the Jets. The Chiefs are 9.5-point home favorites, and recent history says they handle New York. The question is whether the Jets can keep it close enough to sneak a backdoor cover.

Monday night in Minnesota. Buffalo visits the Vikings to close the week as a 3.5-point favorite in what should be the most watchable game on the slate. A primetime stage, two offenses that can score, and a total of 48.5 add up to appointment viewing.
