How the NRL Finals Work (Top-8 Format)

The eight teams that finish the regular season inside the top eight qualify for a four-week finals series. The top four earn a “double chance” – they can lose in Week 1 and still stay alive.

  • Week 1 – Qualifying & Elimination Finals: Qualifying Final 1 is 1st v 4th and Qualifying Final 2 is 2nd v 3rd; Elimination Final 1 is 5th v 8th and Elimination Final 2 is 6th v 7th. Qualifying Final winners advance straight to a home Preliminary Final (a week off); Qualifying Final losers drop to a Semi Final. Elimination Final winners advance to a Semi Final; Elimination Final losers are out.
  • Week 2 – Semi Finals: Each Semi Final pairs a Qualifying Final loser against an Elimination Final winner. Winners advance to the Preliminary Finals; losers are eliminated.
  • Week 3 – Preliminary Finals: Each Preliminary Final pairs a rested Qualifying Final winner (hosting) against a Semi Final winner. The two winners reach the Grand Final.
  • Week 4 – Grand Final: The last two standing meet at Accor Stadium for the Telstra Premiership.
