Targeting disqualification ladder

A player ejected for targeting for the first time in a season can now play the following game, removing the automatic next-game penalty for a first offense. Repeat offenses escalate (see the ladder below).

Offensive pass interference (OPI)

The OPI penalty drops from 15 yards to 10 yards. Fifteen-yard penalties are now reserved mainly for personal fouls and unsportsmanlike conduct.

Coach-to-player helmet communication

In-helmet coach-to-player communication is now permitted across all NCAA divisions, not just the top level.

Helmet safety attachments

Add-on helmet attachments that improve safety, such as a Guardian Cap or a soft-shell cover, are now allowed, as long as every helmet on the team keeps the same color and design.

Sponsor jersey patches

Teams may wear up to two sponsor patches on the jersey during the regular season with conference approval, and a third patch for conference championship and postseason games. Each logo is capped at 4 square inches.

The New Targeting Ladder

Offense (per season)Consequence
First targeting DQEjected from the current game, but may play the next game (no added suspension).
Second targeting DQEjected, and must sit out the first half of the next game.
Third targeting DQEjected, and must sit out the entire next game.

How the 2026 College Football Playoff Works

The Playoff remains a 12-team field, but the bid structure changed for 2026. There are five automatic bids: one each to the champions of the four power conferences (SEC, Big Ten, ACC, and Big 12), plus one to the highest-ranked Group of Six champion. The other seven spots are at-large, awarded to the highest-ranked remaining teams. Notre Dame has no reserved slot and must earn an at-large bid.

Seeding is straight seeding: the four first-round byes go to the four highest-ranked teams overall, not automatically to conference champions. Seeds 5 through 12 play first-round games at the higher seed’s home site, then the bracket moves to bowl sites. The relaunched Pac-12 now sits in the Group of Six pool alongside the American, Mountain West, Sun Belt, MAC, and Conference USA, so its champion competes for that single Group of Six bid rather than a power-conference auto-bid.

2026 College Football Rules FAQ

Does a first targeting ejection still cost a player the next game?

No. For 2026, a first targeting disqualification in a season no longer carries a next-game suspension. The player is still ejected from the current game.

How many teams make the College Football Playoff in 2026?

Twelve. Five automatic bids go to the four power conference champions plus the highest-ranked Group of Six champion, and seven at-large bids fill out the field. The top four seeds get a first-round bye.

Is the Pac-12 a power conference for the Playoff?

No. The relaunched Pac-12 is part of the Group of Six pool, so its champion competes for the single highest-ranked Group of Six bid.

How big can jersey sponsor patches be?

Each patch is capped at 4 square inches. Teams can wear up to two in the regular season and a third in the postseason.
