The move to a Sunday deadline compresses the timeline. Teams finish the preseason, make their final calls that weekend, and the waiver wire resolves the very next afternoon, so rosters and practice squads take shape faster than in past years. How the 90 to 53 Cutdown Works

Training camps open with up to 90 players, and every team has to reach 53 by the deadline. The decisions are about more than raw talent: special-teams value and the ability to play multiple positions often decide the last spots on the roster, and a versatile depth player can beat out a more accomplished specialist. Two rules shape what happens next. Players with fewer than four accrued seasons must pass through waivers before they can sign anywhere, so other teams get first claim in reverse standings order. Vested veterans with four or more accrued seasons can be released and become free agents right away. After the waiver claims are awarded on August 31, teams build practice squads of up to 16 players, or 17 when one qualifies as an International Player, and players can move between the active roster, waivers, and the practice squad from there.
