2026 NCAA Regional Tournament Double-Elimination Format Explained

Understanding how a team survives the regional round can be tricky. Every single regional site utilizes a four-team, double-elimination format. A team must lose twice to be knocked out of the national tournament.

Day 1 (Friday): Game 1 and Game 2 feature standard 1-vs-4 and 2-vs-3 seed matchups.

Day 2 (Saturday): The two losing teams face off in a cutthroat Game 3 elimination match. The two Friday winners play in Game 4 to earn a direct ticket to the Regional Final.

Day 3 (Sunday): Game 5 battles out the final spot in the regional final. Game 6 is the first opportunity for the undefeated team to secure the region. If the team from the losers’ bracket wins Game 6, it forces a winner-take-all Game 7 on Monday.

The lone standing champion from these four teams advances directly to a best-of-three Super Regional series against the winner of the Athens Regional.
