Since replacing the BCS (Bowl Championship Series), the college football playoff (CFP) has been the definitive answer to the controversies that the BCS brought to reward one champion at the FBS level of college football. 2024-25 sees the playoffs expand to 12 teams for the first time with more expansion probably in future seasons.
College Football Playoff Championship History
Before we get into the list of college football playoff winners, here’s a short overview of the championship game for each season.
- 2014-2015: The inaugural college football playoff saw Ohio State as the fourth seed, beating Oregon with a score of 42-20. Ohio State was led by star running back and Dallas Cowboys star, Ezekiel Elliott.
- 2015-2016: Alabama edged out Clemson 45-40 in a high scoring affair.
- 2016-2017: Clemson would get their revenge over Nick Saban and Alabama winning 35-31. Deshaun Watson led the Tigers to a last-minute drive to win the game.
- 2017-2018: Alabama is back again. This time, it’s all SEC. The Crimson Tide beat Georgia in overtime winning 26-23. Tua Tagovailoa came in to lead Alabama to the win.
- 2018-2019: We get Alabama again. This time; however, Trevor Lawrence led Clemson to a lopsided win, 44-16. Lawrence has been starring for the Jacksonville Jaguars since leaving college.
- 2019-2020: This time, we get Clemson in the championship game again. Jeff Burrow who now stars for the Cincinnati Bengals, led LSU to the win, 42-25.
- 2020-2021: Alabama is back in the title game. They had star wide receiver DeVonta Smith catching a ton of passes leading them to a win over Ohio State, 52-24.
- 2021-2022: Georgia finally broke through and beat Alabama, 33-18.
- 2022-2023: Now, we get Georgia for a second year. They took it to TCU with the largest blowout in CFP history, 65-7.
- 2023-2024: We actually have a championship game without a SEC team. Michigan took down Washington, 34-13.
