For the 2024-25 College Football playoff, fans will be treated to see 12 teams earn postseason spots to compete. The seeds for the CFP are determined by the College Football Playoff committee. The first four seeds earn first round byes for the first iteration of the expanded playoff. The four highest-ranked conference champions will get the bye. The playoff schedule has the first round of play held at the higher of the two seeds’ home or designation field. The Sugar Bowl is one of the four quarterfinal round game locations this postseason.
What Stadium is the Sugar Bowl Played in?
The Sugar Bowl is played at the Caesars SuperDome in New Orleans, Louisiana. The is the home stadium of the New Orleans Saints (NFL). Over the years, the sponsor of the stadium has changed a few times. Before Caesars became the naming sponsor, the stadium was known as the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Many fans just refer to it as the Superdome. Either way, the locale has hosted the Sugar Bowl every year since 1975 (except for 2006 when it moved to Atlanta due to Hurricane Katrina).
The Sugar Bowl is formally known as the Allstate Sugar Bowl (since 2007). The expandable capacity of the stadium for football is listed at 76,468 fans. The record for most fans-ever was actually not for football. WrestleMania 34 in 2018 had 78,133 fans in attendance. Sugar Bowl capacity for the College Football Playoff is 68,400 fans.

Here’s the 2025 Sugar Bowl schedule. Please note that the kickoff time is tentatively listed as 7:45PM ET time. The final AllState Sugar Bowl schedule has not been released yet. We are basing the schedule on last year’s game and will update the specifics when they are confirmed. The information provided for planning shouldn’t change much from last year. We do know that the game is set for the evening slot that day. The Rose Bowl kicks off at 5PM ET, so 8:45 PM give or take is the likely kickoff time which is now confirmed. The 2024 Sugar Bowl kickoff was 7:45 local/8:45 ET. The Sugar Bowl TV schedule is taking place on ESPN.

Sugar Bowl History (Before the Playoff)
The Sugar Bowl is tied with the Sun and Orange Bowls as the second-oldest bowl games in the United States. Only the Rose Bowl is older. The Sugar Bowl has been played since January 1st, 1935. The game was originally played at Tulane Stadium before it moved to the Superdome in 1975. Before Allstate took over as the sponsor in 2007, the game was sponsored by Nokia from 1996-2006. BEfore that, USF&G Financial Services was the sponsor from 1988-1995. The Sugar Bowl has been affiliated with all of the different college football championship affiliations. The Bowl Coalition, Bowl Alliance, BCS, and now the College Football Playoff. Over its history, the bowl has seen 28 national championship games.
AllState Sugar Bowl History (Since the College Football Playoff)
Since the College Football Playoff was adopted in 2014, the AllState Sugar Bowl has been part of the bowl rotation for hosting semifinal and championship games. The bowl has seen several semifinal matchups in this timeframe.
With how the 2024-25 college football playoff is setup, the Sugar Bowl will see one of the top four teams in the country. We can expect the Playoff Committee will likely try to align the #1 through #4 seeds regionally as it makes sense to maximize the local fan bases. The 2026 Sugar Bowl will also be a host-site for the 2025-26 College Football Playoff quarterfinals.
