The order below applies to a two-team tie for a division, a two-team tie for a Wild Card, or a tie that only affects seeding.

When three or more teams are level, MLB first looks at the combined record among the tied clubs. If one team has the best record against the others, it is placed first, and the remaining teams then use the two-team rules. If the tied teams are identical against one another, the order runs through intradivision record, then intraleague record, then last-half intraleague record, then last-half-plus-one, exactly as in the two-team sequence. When a tie involves both a division title and a Wild Card, the division champion is decided first, then the leftover teams are sorted with the two-team tiebreakers.
What the tiebreakers decide: seeding and home field
These tiebreakers do more than break a tie for the last spot. They set the full seeding, which in the 12-team format is worth a lot:
- The two division winners with the best records in each league earn a bye straight to the Division Series. The other four teams (the third division winner plus the three Wild Cards) play the best-of-three Wild Card round.
- In the Wild Card round, the higher seed hosts all games in the series.
- Division Series home-field advantage goes to the higher seed. World Series home-field goes to the team with the better regular-season record.
