How to Measure for the Body Fat Calculator

The U.S. Navy method uses a cloth tape measure and a few landmarks. Measure your height standing straight. Measure your neck just below the larynx with the tape sloping slightly down at the front. Measure your waist at the navel for men, and at the narrowest point for women. Women also measure the hips at the widest point. Keep the tape snug but not tight, breathe normally, and take each measurement twice for consistency. Enter the numbers above and the calculator estimates your body fat percentage instantly.

Frequently Asked Questions: Body Fat

How accurate is the Navy body fat method?

The Navy tape method is usually within about 3 to 4 percentage points of a DEXA scan for most people, which makes it a practical way to track trends. It is an estimate, not a clinical measurement, so use it to watch changes over time rather than as an exact number.

What is a healthy body fat percentage?

For men, the fitness range is roughly 14 to 17% and average is 18 to 24%. For women, fitness is about 21 to 24% and average is 25 to 31%. Some essential fat is necessary for health, so very low numbers are not the goal for most people.

Is BMI or body fat percentage better?

They measure different things. BMI compares weight to height and is quick but cannot tell muscle from fat. Body fat percentage estimates how much of your weight is fat, so it gives a fuller picture, especially for muscular people. Using both together works well.
