Why is the 2026 Belmont Stakes at Saratoga?
The race has been moved to Saratoga Race Course for 2024, 2025, and 2026 to allow for the complete demolition and reconstruction of Belmont Park. The “New Belmont Park” is currently scheduled to reopen in September 2026.
Is the 2026 Belmont Stakes distance shorter?
Yes. Because Saratoga’s main dirt track is smaller than the 1.5-mile “Big Sandy” at Belmont Park, the 2026 race will be run at 1 1/4 miles (10 furlongs). This is the same distance as the Kentucky Derby.
