Can Renegade Break the Rail Curse? 2026 Kentucky Derby Odds and Post 1 History

Has a horse ever won the Kentucky Derby from Post 1? Yes, but not in 40 years. The last horse to win from the rail position was Ferdinand in 1986. Despite drawing the difficult #1 post for the 152nd Kentucky Derby, Renegade (4-1) remains the morning-line favorite. With elite jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. and Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher in his corner, Renegade will attempt to become the first horse in four decades to overcome the “Rail Curse.”

The “Rail Curse” by the Numbers

Since the Kentucky Derby moved to a 20-horse field, the inside rail has become the most feared draw in racing. Nothing has changed for the 2026 Kentucky Derby. Here is why:

  • The “Squeeze”: With 20 horses diving for the first turn, the horse at the rail often gets “shuffled back” or pinned against the fence.
  • 40-Year Drought: No winner since 1986.
  • Recent Performance: Only one horse has finished “In the Money” from the rail in the last 15 years (Lookin At Lee, 2nd in 2017).

Why Renegade is Different

While the stats are scary, there are three reasons why Renegade is the betting public’s choice to break the jinx:

  1. The New Starting Gate: Churchill Downs now uses a continuous 20-horse gate (introduced in 2020), which is narrower and sits further away from the inside rail than the old two-gate system. This gives the #1 horse more room to “break” cleanly.
  2. Irad Ortiz Jr.: Widely considered the best tactical jockey in the world, Ortiz is known for finding seams in traffic that other jockeys miss.
  3. The “Pletcher” Factor: Todd Pletcher is a master of preparing horses for the chaos of the Derby. His horses are traditionally excellent “gate breakers,” which is required to survive the #1 spot.

“Better Him Than Us”

Rival trainer Brad Cox, who has three contenders in the field, summed up the industry sentiment perfectly when asked about Renegade’s draw: “Better him than us.” However, oddsmaker Nick Tammaro noted that he didn’t move Renegade off the 4-1 favorite line because of the draw, stating: “You don’t move a horse like that just because of a number. He’s the best horse in the race until someone proves otherwise.”

What is the “Rail Curse” in the Kentucky Derby? The “Rail Curse” refers to the difficulty of winning from the #1 post position. With a 20-horse field, the horse on the inside often gets pinned against the rail or shuffled to the back of the pack during the high-speed break for the first turn.

Who was the last horse to win from Post 1? Ferdinand was the last horse to win from the rail in 1986. Before him, the last winner was Chateaugay in 1963, showing just how difficult the position has been over the last 60 years.

Does a 20-horse field make Post 1 harder? Yes. In smaller fields, the inside rail is often an advantage because it is the shortest path around the track. However, in a 20-horse cavalry charge, the pressure from 19 other horses diving inward makes it significantly harder for the #1 horse to find a clean “lane.”

What are Renegade’s chances of winning from the rail? Renegade is currently a 4-1 favorite. Despite the history, oddsmakers believe his elite tactical speed and the expertise of trainer Todd Pletcher give him the best chance in decades to break the curse.

Is there a new starting gate for the Kentucky Derby? Yes, Churchill Downs introduced a new, single-length 20-horse starting gate in 2020. This gate is slightly narrower and positioned further away from the inside rail than the old “auxiliary gate” system, which theoretically gives the #1 horse a fairer chance at a clean break.
