The Road to the Selection Show: Bubble Watch (Updated March 9)

The Men’s Ice Hockey tournament features only 16 teams. The battle for the six at-large bids is historically one of the most stressful in all of sports.

Current 2026 Men’s Hockey Bubble Situation:

  • Safe (Lock): Minnesota, Denver, Michigan, Boston University, Quinnipiac.
  • Last Four In: St. Cloud State, Cornell, UMass, Penn State.
  • First Four Out: Northeastern, Harvard, Ohio State, Merrimack.

The “Bid Stealer” Alert: The most common source of “bid stealers” is the Hockey East and NCHC tournaments. If a low-seeded team (e.g., Colorado College or Providence) wins their conference tournament, they automatically take an at-large bid from a team on the bubble (like St. Cloud or Cornell). Championship Sunday (March 22) will determine the final field.

Historical Records by Seed (Modern 16-Team Era)

When filling out your 2026 Frozen Four bracket, remember that parity in college hockey is at an all-time high. While the top four #1 seeds have a historical advantage, the “upset factor” is massive.

Early Projections and Key Teams to Watch

As of late January 2026, the season is heating up with conference races tight. Look for Big Ten dominance to continue-teams like Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, and Penn State often stack the top of PairWise rankings thanks to strong non-conference schedules and depth.

Other contenders:

  • NCHC powerhouses (North Dakota, Denver, Minnesota-Duluth) for Midwest/West strength.
  • Hockey East standouts (Boston College, Boston University, Providence).
  • Potential sleepers from ECAC (Quinnipiac) or emerging programs.

Many top prospects are NHL draft picks or future stars-track them here as they chase the national title before turning pro.
