How Field Hockey Scoring and Stats Work
Field hockey is played 11 on the field per team (10 outfield players plus a goalkeeper). Games run as four 15-minute quarters, the format now used by NFHS high school, the NCAA, and the FIH. Here is what to track on your field hockey score sheet.
- Goals: log the time, scorer, and assist, and note whether it came from open play, a penalty corner (PC), or a penalty stroke (PS).
- Penalty corners: a key stat worth tracking on their own, since they drive a large share of scoring.
- Cards: green is a two-minute suspension, yellow is at least five minutes, and red is an ejection.
- Team stats: shots, shots on goal, circle penetrations, and goalkeeper saves round out the picture.
How to Use Each Sheet
Game score and stat sheet
Fill in the score by quarter as the game goes, then log each goal and card with the time and player number. The team-stats box at the bottom gives you a clean side-by-side for shots, penalty corners, and saves.
Lineup card
Mark your starting XI on the pitch diagram (a 4-3-3 is shown), list them by position and number, and keep your substitutes ready. Field hockey uses unlimited rolling substitutions, so the sub list doubles as your rotation plan.
Roster and stat tracker
Keep your whole roster on one page with season totals for goals, assists, points, penalty corners, and cards, plus a separate goalkeeper log for saves and shutouts.
Tournament bracket
Seed eight teams one through eight, write them into the quarterfinal slots, and advance each winner to crown a champion. It is perfect for a weekend tournament, a playoff, or a class bracket challenge.
