Kansas City Chiefs Future Opponents & Scheduling FAQ

How are the Chiefs’ future opponents determined?

The NFL uses a fixed rotation formula to ensure competitive balance and variety. Each year, the Chiefs’ 17-game schedule is built using these four pillars:

  1. Divisional (6 games): Home and away against the Broncos, Chargers, and Raiders.
  2. Conference Rotation (4 games): One full AFC division on a three-year cycle.
  3. Inter-Conference Rotation (4 games): One full NFC division on a four-year cycle.
  4. Standings-Based (3 games): Two games against same-place AFC finishers and one “17th game” against a same-place NFC finisher.

What does “Same Place” or “Positional Matchup” mean?

This is the only part of the schedule that changes based on performance. If the Chiefs finish 3rd in the AFC West (as they did in 2025), they are automatically scheduled to play the 3rd-place teams from the two AFC divisions they aren’t already playing that year. This is why the 2026 schedule features the Bengals and Colts.

When will the “TBD” opponents for 2027 and beyond be finalized?

The specific teams for the TBD slots are finalized the moment the previous regular season ends. For example, the 2027 “Same Place” opponents will be locked in following the conclusion of Week 18 in January 2027. We update the tables on this page as soon as those final seeds are confirmed.

How does the “17th Game” home/away rotation work?

The NFL alternates which conference hosts the extra inter-conference game each year.

  • Even Years (2026, 2028, 2030): The NFC hosts the 17th game, meaning the Chiefs play 9 games on the road.
  • Odd Years (2027, 2029): The AFC hosts the 17th game, giving the Chiefs 9 games at Arrowhead Stadium.

What happens to the schedule if the NFL moves to an 18-game season?

If the league expands to 18 games, the current formula would likely add a second “17th-style” inter-conference game based on standings and introduce a second bye week for all teams. We are tracking these labor negotiations closely and will adjust our 2027–2030 projections the moment a change is ratified.

Can I print these future opponent lists?

Yes. While these lists don’t have kickoff times yet, they are formatted in our “low-ink” style. You can save this page as a PDF or print the tables directly to use as a long-term planning guide for future road trips or season ticket management.
