Biggest movers from Week 9 to Week 10

Fallers

Ohio State (No. 2 to No. 11, down 9): The weekend’s defining result. The Buckeyes went to USC as the No. 2 team and left with a 30-18 loss, the single biggest drop in the new poll. Florida (No. 17 to No. 25, down 8): A 27-8 loss at Georgia knocked the Gators to the back of the ballot. Indiana (No. 4 to No. 6, down 2) and Arizona (No. 22 to No. 24, down 2) slid a couple of spots each, Arizona after a 34-26 loss at Texas Tech.

Risers and new entries

Missouri (No. 23 to No. 19, up 4) posted the biggest jump among holdovers. Utah (No. 6 to No. 3, up 3) and UCLA (No. 7 to No. 5, up 2) both pushed into the top five behind their wins. Georgia climbed from No. 3 to No. 2. Four teams entered the poll: USC at No. 18 on the strength of the win over Ohio State, plus Iowa (No. 21), New Mexico (No. 22) and South Carolina (No. 23).

Dropping out of the Top 25 this week: SMU (No. 19 last week, lost to Syracuse), Northwestern (No. 20), Oklahoma State (No. 24) and Wisconsin (No. 25).

How the AP Top 25 works

The Associated Press Top 25 is a weekly poll of sportswriters and broadcasters from across the country. Each voter submits a ballot ranking their top 25 teams, and points are awarded on a sliding scale: 25 points for a first-place vote down to 1 point for a 25th-place vote. The teams are then ordered by total points, which is why a team can gather first-place votes and still sit at No. 2 or No. 3 if it is listed lower on enough ballots. Polls are released on Sunday afternoons during the season and reflect the games played that weekend. The AP poll is separate from the College Football Playoff selection committee rankings, which begin later in the year and decide the actual playoff field.
