How the AP Top 25 works

The AP Top 25 is voted on each week by a national panel of sportswriters and broadcasters. Every voter submits a personal ballot of 25 teams, awarding 25 points for a first-place vote on down to 1 point for a 25th-place vote. The points are tallied to set the national order, and the team that lands first on the most ballots earns the No. 1 ranking along with most of the first-place votes shown in parentheses. Teams just short of the cut are listed as “others receiving votes.” A new poll comes out every week of the season, usually on Sunday, and it runs separately from the College Football Playoff committee rankings that begin later in the year.
