How Does a 32-Team Seeded Single Elimination Bracket Work?

32-Team Seeded Single Elimination Bracket printable PDF

In a 32-team seeded tournament, teams are ranked 1 (best) to 32 and placed in fixed bracket positions. Every game is a knockout: the winner advances and the loser is out, until one champion remains after 5 rounds.

How the Seeds Are Placed

The bracket is built so the top seed opens against the lowest seed, the second seed sits at the opposite end, and the rest are spread so that, if the favorites keep winning, the number 1 and number 2 seeds can only meet in the final. This rewards regular-season performance and keeps the strongest teams apart in the early rounds.

Number of Games

A single elimination tournament always plays one fewer game than it has teams, so a 32-team bracket has exactly 31 games.

Seeded vs Blind Draw

A seeded bracket ranks teams by results so the field is balanced; a blind draw places teams at random. Prefer a random draw? Use the 32-team blind-draw bracket instead. For more background, see the single-elimination tournament overview on Wikipedia.
