2026 US Open Seeds and Storylines

The main draws are out and the seeds in each singles event are set. World No. 1 Jannik Sinner withdrew with a right knee injury, which handed the top seeding to Alexander Zverev and blew the 2026 US Open bracket wide open. Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is the No. 2 seed at the bottom of the sheet. Casper Ruud, originally the No. 19 seed on the men’s side, also withdrew and was replaced in the draw by lucky loser Arthur Gea. No. 4 seed Novak Djokovic then lost in the first round to Mariano Navone, his first opening-round exit at the US Open, and the top half took its own hit Thursday when No. 3 Felix Auger-Aliassime fell to Karen Khachanov and No. 6 Alex de Minaur lost to Botic van de Zandschulp. That left Zverev, Alcaraz, No. 5 Flavio Cobolli, No. 7 Daniil Medvedev, and No. 8 Ben Shelton as the highest men’s seeds standing. Friday thinned the field further: No. 15 Alexander Bublik lost a five-setter to Tommy Paul, No. 18 Jiri Lehecka fell to Stefanos Tsitsipas, and No. 22 Valentin Vacherot and No. 26 Arthur Rinderknech were beaten in straight sets by Frances Tiafoe and Daniil Medvedev. Saturday took two more out of the men’s top 10: No. 5 Flavio Cobolli lost to No. 28 Alexander Blockx and No. 9 Taylor Fritz lost from two sets up to No. 24 Francisco Cerundolo, which leaves Zverev, Alcaraz, Medvedev, and Shelton as the only men’s top-eight seeds still in the draw. On the women’s side, two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka is the No. 1 seed and is chasing a third straight title in New York, something no woman has done since Serena Williams from 2012 to 2014. She has company at the top: Elena Rybakina, Jessica Pegula, and Coco Gauff can all leave Flushing Meadows as the WTA No. 1. The women’s seeds held up far better than the men’s until Friday, when No. 7 Karolina Muchova lost to No. 26 Emma Navarro and No. 15 Diana Shnaider was beaten by Taylor Townsend. Saturday added two more: No. 10 Amanda Anisimova lost to No. 24 Anastasia Potapova and No. 22 Madison Keys lost to Zheng Qinwen. Anisimova is now the highest women’s seed out, ahead of Muchova and No. 12 Belinda Bencic, who lost in the first round.

Two farewells run through the men’s half of the 2026 US Open bracket. Stan Wawrinka, the 2016 champion, and Gael Monfils are both playing the last major of their careers, and both were handed wild cards to do it. On the women’s side the No. 1 ranking is live all fortnight: Elena Rybakina takes over the top spot if she reaches the semifinals, while Aryna Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula, and Coco Gauff need results of their own to hold or claim it.

Alcaraz has the heavier assignment of the two title favorites: he returns from a four-month wrist layoff with no warm-up matches, and his quarter includes Ben Shelton (8) and Arthur Fils (10), who are drawn to meet in the fourth round. Zverev’s side is kinder early: he is projected to meet Alex de Minaur (6) in the quarterfinals, with Felix Auger-Aliassime (3) and Taylor Fritz (9) sharing the other quarter of his half. In the women’s draw, Sabalenka and Rybakina are in opposite halves and cannot meet before the final, while Iga Swiatek, seeded only No. 8, landed in the toughest quarter alongside Rybakina, Naomi Osaka (13), and Belinda Bencic (12).

The biggest result of the tournament remains No. 4 seed Novak Djokovic losing in five sets to Argentina’s Mariano Navone, 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, and Navone’s run ended in the third round, where Tomas Martin Etcheverry (27) beat him 6-4, 6-4, 6-3. Three more men’s seeds went out in the second round: No. 3 Felix Auger-Aliassime lost to Karen Khachanov in four, No. 6 Alex de Minaur lost in straight sets to Botic van de Zandschulp, and No. 13 Lorenzo Musetti lost to Australia’s Dane Sweeny. Top seed Alexander Zverev needed five sets to get past qualifier Quentin Halys late Thursday night. Friday belonged to the players at the top of the sheet. Carlos Alcaraz, Aryna Sabalenka, and Daniil Medvedev all came through in straight sets, Jessica Pegula dropped her first set of the fortnight before beating Leylah Fernandez, and Tommy Paul needed five sets to get past No. 15 Alexander Bublik and set up a fourth-round meeting with Alcaraz. The upsets came from Emma Navarro, who beat No. 7 Karolina Muchova, and Taylor Townsend, who beat No. 15 Diana Shnaider.
