2026 US Open Seeds and Storylines
The main draws are out and the seeds in each singles event are set. Casper Ruud, originally the No. 19 seed on the men’s side, has since withdrawn and been replaced in the draw by lucky loser Arthur Gea. The biggest news on the men’s side is that world No. 1 Jannik Sinner has withdrawn with a right knee injury, which hands the top seeding to Alexander Zverev and blows the 2026 US Open bracket wide open. Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is the No. 2 seed at the bottom of the sheet, in the same half as Novak Djokovic (4), so the two cannot meet before the semifinals. On the women’s side, two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka is the No. 1 seed and is chasing a third straight title in New York, something no woman has done since Serena Williams from 2012 to 2014. Two farewells run through the men’s half of the 2026 US Open bracket. Stan Wawrinka, the 2016 champion, and Gael Monfils are both playing the last major of their careers, and both were handed wild cards to do it. On the women’s side the No. 1 ranking is live all fortnight: Elena Rybakina takes over the top spot if she reaches the semifinals, while Aryna Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff need results of their own to hold or claim it.
Alcaraz has the heavier assignment of the two title favorites: he returns from a four-month wrist layoff with no warm-up matches, and his quarter includes Ben Shelton (8) and Arthur Fils (10), who are drawn to meet in the fourth round. Zverev’s side is kinder early: he is projected to meet Alex de Minaur (6) in the quarterfinals, with Felix Auger-Aliassime (3) and Taylor Fritz (9) sharing the other quarter of his half. In the women’s draw, Sabalenka and Rybakina are in opposite halves and cannot meet before the final, while Iga Swiatek, seeded only No. 8, landed in the toughest quarter alongside Rybakina, Naomi Osaka (13) and Belinda Bencic (12).
