We’ve finally made it. The 2024 NBL Grand Final Championship playoff schedule is now set. Fans will enjoy Melbourne United playing the Tasmania JackJumpers in the best of five game series. Game #1 is scheduled to take place on Sunday, March 17th, 2024 at John Cain Arena. If a fifth and deciding game is necessary, it takes place on Sunday, March 31st, 2024.
How Does the Grand Final Championship Work?
Apologies if I muck up some of the terminology that is slightly different in Australia from the United States. Anyway, the Grand Final Championship is a best of five series single-elimination round. The first team who wins three games (there are no ties in the NBL), takes home the championship. Melbourne United has the home court advantage (ie if we go to five games, three will be on their home court). Just like the best of three games we saw in the NBL semifinal round of play where it was the first team to two wins.
Playoff History of the NBL
This was the 46th season for the NBL. The league was established in 1949 and has seen the number of teams fluctuate over the years. We enjoyed 10 teams competing in the 2023-24 season to earn one of six spots in the 2024 NBL Playoffs. The first NBL Grand Final took place on June 10th, 1979 in Melbourne, Australia. St. Kilda Saints won the championship over the Canberra Cannons (94-93). Today, we enjoy a best of five game series along with a NBA-style play in format.

Which NBL Team has Won the most Grand Finals?
The Perth Wildcats have won 10 Grand Finals and appeared in 15 Grand Finals in total. Tasmania was able to keep Perth from adding to this total by winning their semifinal matchup to take on Melbourne United for the 2024 NBL Championship. Melbourne United has appeared in 15 Grand Finals and won it five times (last victory in 2021). Tasmania appeared once in 2022 and lost, so we should get to see one of the teams add to their win tally this postseason. Tasmania entered the NBL during the 2020-21 season for the first time, so not too shabby of a timeframe for their second appearance in the Grand Final!
