While 32 of the 68 spots are awarded via an automatic bid for winning a conference tournament or regular season title, there are 36 at-large bids. The NCAA Selection Committee picks these teams based on the body of work they have accomplished during the regular season. The committee will then seed the teams from #1 to #68.
How Does the First Four Work?
The NCAA Selection committee will determine the seeds for all 68 teams. Then, the four-lowest seeded at-large teams and four-lowest automatic qualifying teams will face off in the First Four. The winners of these games will progress to playing in the field of 64 with the remainder of the field.
