How Many Teams Earn a Spot in March Madness?

For the 2024 NCAA Men’s basketball tournament, there will be 68 teams who earn a spot in the tournament. That is why so many sports fans ask when is Selection Sunday 2024? While 32 of the 68 spots are awarded via an automatic bid for winning a conference tournament or regular season title, there are 36 at-large bids. The NCAA Selection Committee picks these teams based on the body of work they have accomplished during the regular season. The committee will then seed the teams from #1 to #68.

How Does the First Four Work?

The NCAA Selection committee will determine the seeds for all 68 teams. Then, the four-lowest seeded at-large teams and four-lowest automatic qualifying teams will face off in the First Four. The winners of these games will progress to playing in the field of 64 with the remainder of the field.

The 2024 Selection Sunday broadcast will be on CBS Sports on Sunday, March 17th, 2024. The show will kick off after the conclusion of conference tournament play earlier that day. The men’s selection show will air at 6PM Eastern Time. The women’s NCAA Basketball tournament Selection Show will air at 8PM ET on ESPN.
