How the AP Top 25 Works

The AP Top 25 is a weekly poll voted on by a national panel of sportswriters and broadcasters. Each voter submits a ballot ranking their top 25 teams, and the ballots are scored on a sliding scale: 25 points for a first-place vote down to 1 point for a 25th-place vote. The points are added up across every ballot, and the totals set the order you see here. A new poll comes out each Sunday during the season once Saturday’s games are final, with the preseason poll landing in August. One thing worth remembering: the AP poll is a media poll and is separate from the College Football Playoff committee rankings, which begin later in the year and are what actually decide the playoff field.
