The Folarin Balogun red card that threatened to sideline the USMNT’s star striker has been suspended by FIFA — and he is now cleared to face Belgium in the 2026 World Cup Round of 16. In a July 5 ruling, world soccer’s governing body placed Balogun’s automatic one-match ban under a 12-month probation, freeing him to start when the United States meets Belgium in the knockout round.

What FIFA ruled on the Folarin Balogun red card

In a statement, FIFA said the ban is “suspended for a probationary period of one [1] year” under Article 27 of its Disciplinary Code. In plain terms: Balogun does not have to sit out the Belgium match, but if he is sent off again within the next 12 months, the suspension can be reinstated. It is a significant reprieve for a USMNT attack that would have been badly weakened without its first-choice No. 9.
