Super Bowl Squares (also called Football Squares or Box Pool) is one of the most popular and easiest ways to add excitement to the big game. There is no football knowledge required! It’s a fun, luck-based pool where players claim squares on a 10×10 grid (100 total squares), random numbers 0-9 are assigned to rows and columns, and winners are determined by the last digits of each team’s score at the end of each quarter and the final score.

Quick Rules: How Super Bowl Squares Works
- Grid Setup: 10×10 = 100 squares. One team (e.g., AFC Champion) on top (columns), the other (e.g., NFC Champion) on the side (rows).
- Claim Squares: Players pick/buy squares before numbers are assigned (random 0-9 drawn for each row/column after all are filled—use a hat/draw app for fairness).
- Winning Squares: At the end of Q1, halftime (Q2), Q3, and final score, match the last digit of each team’s score to find the intersecting square’s winner.
- Example: If score is Broncos 23 – Patriots 17 → last digits 3 (Broncos) and 7 (Patriots) → that square wins for the quarter.
- Payouts: Vary by your group—common options below. The pool total = # squares sold × cost per square.
- Overtime? Most pools use final score (post-OT) for the last payout; check your rules.
Popular Payout Examples (for a 100-Square Pool)
Customize in the generator! Here are standard setups:
- Equal Payouts (simple & fair): $10/square = $1,000 pot
- Each quarter winner: $250
- Final score winner: $250
- Increasing Payouts (builds excitement):
- 1st Quarter: $100
- 2nd Quarter (Halftime): $200
- 3rd Quarter: $200
- Final Score: $500
- Percentage Split (common for charity/office):
- 20% to Q1 winner
- 30% to Q2 (halftime)
- 20% to Q3
- 30% to final score (or 40% final for bigger finish)
- Other Twists: Winner-take-all on final only, reverse payouts (losing score wins extra), or neighbor bonuses (adjacent squares split a side pot).
Best/Worst Numbers (Historical Trends)
Numbers like 0, 1, 3, 4, and 7 appear most often in football scores (great for last-digit wins). Avoid 2, 5, 9 if you can!
