Even though the Lahaina Civic Center is still rebuilding after the 2023 wildfires, the tournament everyone just calls “Maui” returns to Hawai’i (this year at Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu) with one of the strongest eight-team fields in recent memory. Eight power-conference heavyweights, three games in three days, and a trophy that has predicted 33 of the last 39 Final Four teams before its time for this season’s March Madness.

First-Round Games to Watch
Iowa State vs. Dayton (Mon 10:00 p.m. ET | ESPN)
The preseason No. 5 Cyclones bring T.J. Otzelberger’s suffocating defense and a loaded backcourt (Keshon Gilbert, Curtis Jones). Dayton just stunned UConn on the road last week and returns nearly everyone from an NCAA team. Early upset watch.
North Carolina vs. Auburn (Mon 12:30 a.m. ET | ESPN)
Two programs looking to make statements. Hubert Davis has UNC (preseason top-15) with Elliot Cadeau running the show and a revamped frontcourt. The Tigers counter with Johni Broome (17 PPG, 10 RPG) and the SEC’s most explosive offense. Midnight madness, literally.
Memphis vs. UConn (Mon 5:00 p.m. ET | ESPN2)
Penny Hardaway’s Tigers are stacked with transfers and high-upside freshmen. Dan Hurley’s defending back-to-back champs are still figuring out life after Donovan Clingan. Revenge game vibes from last year’s opener.
Colorado vs. Michigan State (Mon 7:30 p.m. ET | ESPN2)
Tom Izzo reloads with Coen Carr, Jase Richardson, and a top-10 recruiting class. Tad Boyle’s Buffs have KJ Simpson gone but return Tristan da Silva’s brother and a veteran core. Classic Big Ten vs. Pac-12 slugfest.
