How Betting Odds Formats Work

American Odds (Moneyline)

Popular in the US. Positive (+) shows profit on a $100 bet (e.g., +200 = win $200 profit on $100 stake, total $300 return). Negative (-) shows amount to bet to win $100 (e.g., -150 = bet $150 to win $100 profit, total $250 return).

Decimal Odds

Common in Europe, Canada, Australia. Shows total return per $1 staked (including stake). E.g., 2.50 means $1 bet returns $2.50 total ($1.50 profit).

Fractional Odds

Traditional UK/Ireland format. Shows profit relative to stake. E.g., 3/1 means win $3 profit per $1 staked (total $4 return). 1/2 means win $0.50 profit per $1 staked.

Implied Probability

The % chance the bookmaker assigns to the outcome (removing vig/overround for rough estimate). Lower % = longer odds/higher payout. Useful for spotting value: if you think true probability > implied %, it’s potentially +EV.
